From the employer
Pipeworks Studios is seeking a UI/UX Designer II to serve as the senior UI/UX individual contributor and primary experience-design owner for a high-profile digital collectible card game. This role will define the information architecture, interaction models, and player flows for data-driven actions across core card gameplay, persistence, progression, and related metagame systems.
The designer will translate complex game rules, feature requirements, and data states into cohesive player experiences that UI art and engineering can implement clearly and consistently. The role owns UX strategy, interaction design, and production-ready specifications while partnering with UI art on visual execution and engineering on implementation.
Experience with free-to-play (F2P) collectible card games (CCGs), whether through professional development or demonstrated subject matter expertise, is highly preferred. A strong understanding of the genre's player expectations, collection management, progression systems, and interconnected gameplay loops will be particularly valuable for success in this role.
This is a full-time temporary role with the possibility of extension or conversion to regular full-time employment after six months. Our studio is based in Eugene, Oregon, and the successful candidate may choose to work fully remotely, in a hybrid arrangement, or in the office. Responsibilities

- Own end-to-end UX for data-driven actions and player flows across core card gameplay, persistence, progression, and related metagame systems.
- Translate game design goals, rules, and system data into information architecture, user journeys, screen flows, wireframes, prototypes, and implementation-ready specifications.
- Define interaction behavior, content hierarchy, states, transitions, edge cases, data requirements, and acceptance criteria so art and engineering can execute with minimal ambiguity.
- Partner with game design, UI art, engineering, production, QA, and external stakeholders to carry features from concept through implementation, validation, and delivery.
- Lead UX reviews, communicate design rationale, reconcile feedback, and maintain a consistent player experience across interconnected features.
- Validate designs through playtests, usability reviews, and available player feedback, then iterate based on findings.
- Establish reusable UX patterns and documentation practices that improve consistency and reduce rework.
- Scope and plan owned work, surface risks and dependencies early, and provide craft guidance to designers working on connected flows.
- Strong interaction-design and systems-thinking skills, with demonstrated experience turning complex rules, data, and state changes into clear player actions and feedback.
- Proficiency in information architecture, user flows, wireframing, interactive prototyping, and annotated production specifications.
- Strong understanding of visual hierarchy, usability, accessibility, readability, and consistency across data-rich interfaces.
- Ability to anticipate alternate states, transitions, edge cases, error conditions, and the ways content may scale over time.
- Proficiency with Figma or comparable UI/UX design and prototyping tools.
- Proven ability to collaborate with UI artists and engineers throughout implementation while balancing player needs, creative goals, and technical constraints.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present rationale, resolve conflicting feedback, and document decisions for distributed teams and external partners.
Nice-To-Have Skills

- Shipped ownership of persistence, progression, collection, or other interconnected metagame experiences.
- Experience working on licensed intellectual property or in a co-development environment with external partner reviews.
- Familiarity with in-engine UI frameworks, proprietary UI tools, or implementation workflows.
- Experience using usability studies, playtest findings, or telemetry to evaluate and improve player flows.
Experience and Portfolio
- Five or more years of professional UI/UX, product design, or game design experience.
- Contributions to two or more shipped games or comparable production releases, including at least one feature or system led from concept through delivery.
- Prefer portfolio demonstrating ownership of complex interaction flows, design rationale, iteration, cross-discipline collaboration, and final outcomes.
