Role brief

remoteroles summary, based on the employer's posting.

What you'll do

  • Assess energy-saving and demand-cutting options, including operational adjustments and capital projects
  • Study interval utility and sub-meter readings to map loads, find demand-charge causes and spot unusual patterns
  • Run MBCx baselines and monitoring, then verify savings persist and raise operational measures with facility teams
  • Develop campus metering plans, prepare specifications and diagrams, and oversee commissioning and system integration
  • Set up FDD rules, prioritize alerts, estimate fault impacts, and report verified program performance to stakeholders

What you bring

  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, energy systems, computer science or a related STEM field
  • At least three years in energy engineering, building performance analysis or a related discipline
  • You can analyze interval meter data and identify efficiency and demand-reduction options for HVAC, plants or distributed energy resources

Who this fits

This mid-level role suits an engineer who can combine building-system analysis, energy data work and clear customer-facing communication. The position is remote in the United States and requires travel.

From the employer

Ameresco, Inc. (NYSE:AMRC) is a leading energy solutions provider dedicated to helping customers reduce costs, enhance resilience, and decarbonize to net zero in the global energy transition. We are a trusted, full-service partner to public sector and government entities, K-12 schools, higher education, utilities, and healthcare customers across the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Europe.

At Ameresco, we show the way by developing, constructing and operating tailored smart energy efficiency solutions, distributed energy resources, and infrastructure upgrades that drive cost savings, resilience, decarbonization, and innovation. Our comprehensive portfolio is built to address the challenges of today and adapt the future, ensuring long-term sustainability and success for our customers.

Ameresco has an immediate opening for a Energy Engineer / Analyst to join our Performance Engineering team, supporting a diverse multi-site portfolio spanning commercial office, K-12, healthcare, and government facilities. This role blends deep building systems expertise, data analytics fluency, and customer engagement — operating at the intersection of engineering, FDD/MBCx, and M&V.

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate potential energy savings and demand reduction opportunities, including operational changes and capital measures.
  • Analyze interval (15-min/hourly) utility and sub-meter data to characterize load profiles, identify demand charge drivers, and detect anomalies.
  • Execute MBCx workflows including baseline establishment, ongoing performance monitoring, and savings persistence verification; identify and present operational ECMs to facility stakeholders.
  • Support the development and implementation of campus metering systems (electricity, gas, steam, chilled water); develop specifications and single-line diagrams; oversee meter commissioning and EMIS/DAS integration.
  • Configure, deploy, and manage FDD rule sets within EMIS/analytics platforms; triage and prioritize fault alerts and develop fault impact estimates to support O&M decision-making.
  • Measure and verify performance of energy management programs over time.
  • Deliver clear technical reports and presentations translating complex analytics into actionable guidance for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, Computer Science, or related STEM field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in energy engineering, building performance analysis, or related discipline.
  • Travel Required.

Additional Qualifications:

  • CEM, CMVP, or CCP certification.
  • Prior customer-facing or consulting experience.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting, retro-commissioning, or monitoring based commissioning of HVAC systems and central cooling and heating plants.
  • Familiar with measurement and verification methods and protocols.
  • Working knowledge of BAS/BMS platforms.
  • Energy and data analysis experience, including:
    • Data driven modeling,
    • Interval meter data analysis,
    • Energy efficiency and demand reduction opportunities for HVAC, cooling and heating plants and distributed energy resources.
  • Working knowledge of advanced data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., Python, R)
  • Experience leveraging AI tools effectively and appropriately in an energy engineering context.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; high emotional intelligence; solutions-oriented mindset with ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
